Gianforte wins Montana special House election despite being charged with assault.

Republican Greg Gianforte claimed a narrow victory in Montana’s closely watched special election for the state’s at-large congressional seat, defeating Democrat Rob Quist in a race that is likely to be mined for clues about how the voting electorate feels about the political turbulence of Donald Trump’s young presidency heading into next year’s midterm elections. With 83 percent of precincts reporting, Gianforte led Quist by roughly 7 points in the race. The results came after a wild 24 hours in the race, in which Gianforte, a billionaire technology entrepreneur from Bozeman, was charged with misdemeanor assault after he allegedly “body slammed” Ben Jacobs, a reporter for the Guardian newspaper, at a campaign event on Wednesday just hours before voters headed to the polls. Speaking to supporters at his victory party, Gianforte publicly apologized for the altercation. “Last night, I made a mistake, and I took an action that I can’t take back,” Gianforte said in his first public s

How to talk to kids about the Manchester terror attack

Parents and children learning about the bombing at an  Ariana Grande  concert in Manchester, England, may find the violence especially troubling since the terror attack targeted a venue full of children and adolescents. Disturbing news can be hard for parents to grasp, much less explain to curious children. Young people also consume their own media through Facebook and Twitter and may form their own impressions, leaving parents concerned about how to best provide support amid the frightening news. Experts advise parents not to avoid difficult topics, but instead engage their children to help them make sense of scary events. Dr. David Palmiter, professor of psychiatry at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and author of "Dr. David Palmiter's Blog for Hectic Parents" advises moms and dads to prepare themselves before rushing to their children’s rescue. "We have to acknowledge our own craziness. No engaged parent is happier than their least happy chi

Newark, N.J. airport reopens after United Airlines engine fire

(Reuters) - Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey reopened late on Tuesday after being shut down when 131 people were evacuated from a United Airlines flight over flames seen emerging from an aircraft engine. United Airlines Flight 1579, a Boeing 757, was on a taxiway bound for San Francisco at about 9 p.m. when the flames were spotted coming from its right-side engine, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a written statement. United spokesman Jonathan Guerin said the aircraft was notified of the apparent fire by the control tower and one person suffered an ankle injury while evacuating. Five people suffered minor injuries during the incident and travelers should expect delays through the night, an airport spokesman told Reuters in an email. Guerin said there were 124 passengers and seven crew aboard the plane. The passengers were ferried back to the terminal and would be put on later flights, he added. The FAA said it would investigate the incident.

‘Keep Calm and Carry On’: Manchester bombing rouses British stiff upper lip

An unidentified woman knits on a bench in the underground train system, London, England, 1939. In the aftermath of the deadliest terrorist attack on Northern England, Britons invoked a popular World War II-era expression of resilience and purpose: “Keep Calm and Carry On.” The phrase comes from a morale-boosting poster created by the British government in 1939 for war against the Nazis. Though not officially used at the time, the inspirational poster took on a new life in the 21st century for people yearning for self-assurance and inner peace in the face of adversity. ISIS claimed responsibility  for the suicide bombing in the entrance hall to the Manchester Arena, which occurred around 10:30 p.m. local time Monday, as crowds of children and teenagers were leaving a concert by American pop singer Ariana Grande. The terrorist attack, which  killed at least 22 and hospitalized 59 , was the deadliest on British soil since the coordinated bombings on the London Underground on July 7,

Does Melania Trump Really Not Want to Hold Her Husband’s Hand.

Air Force One in Rome Did first lady Melania Trump avoid the president’s hand again as they stepped off  Air Force One  in Rome? (Photo: Getty Images) Donald  and  Melania Trump ’s marriage is endlessly scrutinized for signs of trouble, so when Melania appeared — for the second day in a row — to avoid holding her husband’s hand, the Internet went wild with speculation. On Tuesday, the couple landed in Rome as part of a nine-day “ world peace ” tour through Saudi Arabia, Israel, and finally Italy, where the pair will meet with Pope Francis at the Vatican and visit the Sistine Chapel. While walking down the steps of  Air Force One  onto the tarmac at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino International Airport Tuesday night, the president attempted to hold his wife’s hand at the exact moment she reached up to adjust flyaway strands of hair. The president’s hand hung in the air with uncertainty before he placed it on his wife’s behind. Social media, having barely recovered from a Monday incid

In the newest report suggesting the White House sought to tamp down the Russia probe, the Post said Trump urged National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers and to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats to publicly deny any evidence of collusion between his campaign and Russia during last year's presidential election. Citing current and former intelligence officials, the Post said both Rogers and Coats, who was appointed by Trump, did not comply with his request. The president made the

Another crisis hits the White House after Post story

Reactions   Like   Reblog on Tumblr   Share   Tweet   Email     White House calls Wash Post report that Trump gave classified info to the Russians 'as reported, false' Scroll back up to restore default view. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump White House has returned to crisis mode as it reacts to yet another bombshell. The feeding frenzy Monday was brought on by a Washington Post report that President Donald Trump revealed highly classified information to Russian officials in a meeting last week. That led to closed-door emergency meetings, hallways packed with reporters, statements rushed out, but few questions answered. White House officials denied the story but refused to answer specific questions. It's become a familiar scenario in the crisis-prone Trump White House, where big news breaks fast and the aides paid to respond seem perpetually caught off-guard. The bizarre scenes Monday night included a

Are Seahawks best fit left for Colin Kaepernick? It makes some sense

Another day, another  Colin Kaepernick  update. And there might be some news here. As the reasons why he remains unsigned are debated, it might be time to focus on one of the handful of teams for which Kaepernick makes some sense — the  Seattle Seahawks . And the good news for him is that the Seahawks don’t appear to have ruled him out as an option. Yes, the Seahawks are set with  Russell Wilson  as their starter. But two of the other three quarterbacks on the roster —  Jake Heaps  and Skyler Howard — are completely unproven, and the third, backup  Trevone Boykin , has been arrested twice this offseason. Granted, we’re talking about Boykin being charged with two misdemeanors (marijuana possession and public intoxication), followed by a probation violation stemming from the prior incident. But Boykin hasn’t exactly proven completely reliable, either. Colin Kaepernick could be in play for the Seattle Seahawks at some point. (AP) Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was asked during a

Donald Trump, White House still refuse to talk about the ‘tapes’

Reactions   Like   Reblog on Tumblr   Share   Tweet   Email Spicer says President Trump ‘has made it clear what his position is’ on the alleged White House ’tapes’ White House press secretary Sean Spicer repeatedly told reporters during Monday’s daily briefing that the president ‘has made it clear what his position is’ on the alleged ‘tapes’ of recorded conversations in the White House, including those with former FBI Director James Comey. White House press secretary Sean Spicer continued the administration’s refusal to confirm or deny the use of a recording system by President Trump during Monday’s briefing. In a contentious briefing when he took just 22 minutes of questions, Spicer doubled, tripled and quadrupled down on his statement last week that Trump had “ nothing further to add ” on  his threatening tweet to former FBI Director James Comey . The Friday morning missive suggested that Trump might have privately recorded his conversatio
